SEGi University is driving Malaysia’s scientific innovation agenda through groundbreaking collaborations with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), underscoring its position as a catalyst for impactful research and postgraduate excellence. These alliances, led by Associate Professor Dr Saeid Reza Doust Jalali and Associate Professor Dr Negar Shafiei Sabet with UiTM’s Professor Dr Aida Nur Ashikin Abd Rahman and Associate Professor Dr Jamal Hussaini, showcase how partnerships between leading institutions can directly contribute to the nation’s innovation-driven economy.
The signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) worth RM750,000 in 2021 with UiTM’s Faculty of Medicine, alongside a matching grant of RM700,000 with the Faculty of Dentistry in the same year, has created a strong foundation for cross-disciplinary collaboration. These initiatives focus not only on scientific discovery but also on equipping postgraduate researchers with the tools to solve real-world problems — a vital step when Malaysia invests just 1.04% of its GDP in research and development.
Such investments have already delivered measurable results. Two postgraduate students have successfully completed their research under this collaboration, adding to the pool of highly skilled researchers needed to support Malaysia’s ambition of becoming a regional research hub. More notably, the partnership has produced two copyright-protected Intellectual Properties, registered in March 2024 and May 2025, highlighting originality and the ability to transform knowledge into tangible innovation. This aligns with Malaysia’s push to increase its number of researchers to 55 per 10,000 labour force, a benchmark set by UNESCO.
These achievements speak directly to why SEGi University invests in such collaborations: to nurture the next generation of scientists and innovators who will tackle pressing health and societal challenges. By engaging in projects that combine medical science and dentistry with advanced biomedical research, SEGi is shaping outcomes that matter — from stronger healthcare systems to improved innovation capacity.
Research partnerships of this scale also position SEGi as a frontrunner in global academic benchmarking. In an era where cross-institutional collaboration is proven to accelerate innovation — with UNESCO noting that over 40% of scientific publications worldwide are now co-authored internationally — SEGi demonstrates how Malaysian universities can not only participate but lead in high-impact research.
This forward-looking approach ensures that research is not confined to academia but creates solutions that improve communities, healthcare systems, and innovation ecosystems. By embedding global standards, SEGi remains aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, providing meaningful impact far beyond its campuses.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being)
SDG 4 (Quality Education)
SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure)
