12 April 2025 marked a night of purpose and momentum as the “Lights Out: Power Off, Future On” campaign culminated in an electrifying 5km Lights Out Night Run around SEGi University’s campus. Organised by final-year Mass Communication students from the School of Communication & Creative Design, the event was part of their Communication and Campaign course, demonstrating how impactful student-led initiatives can be when they align learning with real-world causes.
Over 200 runners took part in the symbolic race, held in the dark to emphasise the importance of energy conservation and reducing carbon emissions. The campaign highlighted the urgent call for Sustainable Development Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy – bringing together community members, educators, and NGOs in a collective movement toward a more sustainable future.
Officiated by YB Tuan Muhammad Izuan bin Ahmad Kasim, ADUN Kota Damansara, alongside SEGi’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Srikumar Chakravarthi, the event saw more than just ceremonial significance. It was a rallying cry for youth action, environmental responsibility, and community collaboration in the face of rising global energy demands.
According to the International Energy Agency, energy demand is expected to increase by 25% by 2040, yet 675 million people worldwide still live without access to electricity. Raising awareness at grassroots levels, especially among youth, is critical to driving behavioural change and advancing clean, inclusive energy solutions.
The students’ campaign did more than promote awareness. It inspired action. A total of RM1,000 was raised and donated to Komuniti Tunas Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, an NGO dedicated to community development and empowerment. Their work aligns with the campaign’s mission of supporting sustainable livelihoods and education for all.
Following the run, participants gathered for a music-filled celebration—a fitting close to a night that was both reflective and inspiring. The Lights Out Night Run may have marked the end of the campaign, but it lit the way forward for more youth-driven movements advocating sustainability, energy efficiency, and climate-conscious living.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7)
Climate Action (SDG 13)
Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11)
