What These Students Did in One Day Could Echo for a Lifetime

SEGi University’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences proudly secured a spot among the Top 15 teams at the International Microbiology Quiz Competition 2025 (iMICROBE’25), a prestigious event hosted by Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) on 17 May. Outshining participants from across Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, the SEGi team ranked 7th in a field of 28 elite university teams, comprising 112 participants. This impressive achievement reaffirms SEGi’s commitment to cultivating high-performing healthcare students equipped for global impact.

Representing SEGi University were students Chit Min Thet, Lai Weng Sum, Clement Lee Wei Jie, and Peyrishka Shammini, who demonstrated exceptional mastery in microbiology, immunology, and infectious diseases. Their performance throughout a series of high-intensity challenges — including rapid-fire Kahoot quizzes and a physically engaging “Explorace” — was a true reflection of their academic rigour, critical thinking, and collaborative spirit.

Guided by the dedicated mentorship of Associate Professor Negar Shafiei Sabet and Associate Professor Dr. Koshy Philip, the team’s success showcases not only academic excellence but also the values of perseverance, innovation, and teamwork — core attributes of effective healthcare professionals. The achievement underlines the quality of SEGi’s medical curriculum, which blends theoretical depth with real-world readiness.

The impact of such competitions goes beyond medals and rankings. According to the World Health Organization, global demand for skilled health professionals will reach a shortfall of 10 million by 2030, particularly in low and middle-income countries. By encouraging students to excel in key fields like microbiology and infectious disease, SEGi is actively helping to bridge this critical talent gap. Events like iMICROBE’25 not only sharpen scientific acumen but also instil a sense of purpose — to serve communities with empathy, knowledge, and global-mindedness.

In a world still grappling with infectious disease outbreaks and the long-term effects of global pandemics, developing resilient healthcare leaders has never been more urgent. SEGi believes in providing students with opportunities to test their skills in real-world scenarios, fostering confidence, ethical practice, and cultural awareness. Every international achievement helps anchor Malaysia’s role in producing globally competitive graduates ready to meet complex health challenges.
