Why Safe Water Is Everyone’s Problem — And These Students Know It

SEGi University marked World Health Day 2025 with an empowering campaign themed Clean Water, Healthy Life, led by students from the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & Information Technology (FOEBEIT). Held on 5 April 2025, the initiative brought scientific awareness to the forefront through a series of student-led poster exhibitions, presentations, and water sampling demonstrations aimed at highlighting the crucial link between access to clean water and community well-being.

This event aligned with growing global concerns over water access, as more than 2.2 billion people worldwide still lack safely managed drinking water and 3.6 billion live without proper sanitation, according to the World Health Organization. In Malaysia, while the infrastructure for piped water is widespread, water quality challenges persist due to pollution, rapid urbanisation, and climate-related disruptions — making awareness and preventive action critical.

Students showcased practical solutions and scientific insights that made complex environmental issues accessible to the public. Water testing demonstrations allowed participants to understand the indicators of safe water, while exhibits educated attendees on the dangers of waterborne diseases and the importance of sustainable water management. This hands-on learning approach transformed technical knowledge into community advocacy.

The campaign served not only as an academic milestone for students, but as a civic contribution toward public health education. It highlighted how future engineers and technologists have a role that extends beyond infrastructure — to shaping sustainable communities and addressing pressing global issues like clean water access and climate resilience.

SEGi’s emphasis on real-world application and social responsibility was evident throughout the event. Students demonstrated not just technical competence, but also leadership, empathy, and the ability to communicate science in ways that inspire change. This initiative reflects the university’s continued commitment to producing graduates who are not only career-ready, but also socially conscious global citizens.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG 13: Climate Action
