On 15 May 2025, the ASHRAE SEGi University Student Branch, in collaboration with Trane Malaysia Sales & Services Sdn Bhd, brought science to life for 97 young minds at SJK(T) Tun Sambanthan, USJ through a dynamic STEM Workshop themed “Discover, Build, and Innovate.” The half-day event aimed to ignite curiosity and inspire innovation among Standard 4 students, using practical, hands-on activities to nurture early interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Participants rotated through five immersive learning stations—Volcano Eruption, Remote Control Car, Water Filtration, Solar Fan, and Vacuum Machine—designed to showcase the relevance and excitement of STEM concepts through experimentation and teamwork. The students’ enthusiastic participation reflected the impact of experiential learning, where science becomes tangible and accessible.
Guided by 7 passionate student volunteers from SEGi and 31 dedicated Trane Malaysia team members, the workshop fostered mentorship, teamwork, and knowledge sharing between industry professionals, future engineers, and young learners. The collaboration reflects the shared commitment of both organisations to expanding educational equity and bridging the science skills gap in Malaysia.
According to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia aims to have 60% of its future workforce in STEM fields to remain competitive globally. Yet, UNESCO reports that girls and students from underserved communities are still underrepresented in science-based careers. Early-stage STEM engagement like this workshop plays a pivotal role in shifting that trajectory by cultivating excitement and confidence from a young age.
The event concluded with a symbolic gesture of appreciation as Ong Wee Sern, Country Manager of Trane Malaysia, and Ts. Dr. King Yeong Jin, Deputy Dean of SEGi’s Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & IT, presented a certificate and souvenir to the school—marking a meaningful milestone in corporate-academic-community collaboration.
Such initiatives are part of SEGi’s wider mission to develop responsible global citizens equipped with the knowledge and empathy to drive sustainable change. This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
Goal 4: Quality Education
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
