Chinese Ambassador Ouyang Yujing Visits SEGi University to Celebrate Chinese New Year

In a vibrant celebration of the Lunar New Year, SEGi University hosted a festive gathering on 12 February 2025, themed “Auspicious Serpent Brings Prosperity – A Flourishing Future at SEGi”. Nearly 500 students and staff came together to embrace the joyous occasion, immersing the campus in a rich cultural atmosphere filled with the essence of Chinese traditions.

A highlight of the event was the distinguished presence of H.E. Ouyang Yujing, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Malaysia, along with Education Counsellor Zhao Changtao and Secretary Tang Jing. Their attendance underscored the strong cultural and educational ties between China and Malaysia.

During his speech, Ambassador Ouyang extended warm New Year greetings and commended SEGi University’s Confucius Institute for its remarkable contributions to cultural exchange and international Chinese education. He highlighted the significance of 2024 as the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, marking a historic milestone for both nations. Emphasising the Confucius Institute’s role as a bridge for cultural exchange, he acknowledged its success in nurturing globally minded talents and strengthening bilateral understanding and friendship. He encouraged the institute to continue fostering cross-cultural appreciation and contributing to the deepening of China-Malaysia relations.

In addition, Directors of SEGi University Confucius Institute Koh Yoke Ling (Malaysia) and Dr. Ma Haiyan (China) of the  shared insights into their ongoing efforts to promote cultural exchange between Malaysia and China. The institute has been actively organising cultural programmes, including the successful hosting of the 3rd Malaysia-China University Student Chinese Debate Competition, providing a platform for young scholars to engage in intellectual discourse and linguistic exchange. Looking ahead, the Confucius Institute remains committed to strengthening cultural collaboration and fostering mutual learning between the two nations, further enriching global cultural integration.

One of the most anticipated moments of the event was the high-pole lion dance performance, a breathtaking display of agility, strength, and cultural vibrancy. As the energetic beats of the drums filled the air, the majestic orange lion leapt gracefully between towering poles, captivating the audience with every precise movement. The 10-foot-high “cai qing” (plucking the greens) stunt left the crowd in awe, symbolising prosperity, success, and good fortune for the year ahead.

Adding to the immersive cultural experience, the Confucius Institute also hosted a Chinese cultural showcase, featuring calligraphy, paper cutting, tea ceremonies, and interactive activities. Ambassador Ouyang, along with SEGi University representatives, took the opportunity to visit the exhibition, engaging with participants and personally meeting Chinese students, Confucius Institute faculty, and learners. His warm interactions further reinforced the spirit of community and cross-cultural appreciation.

As the drums faded and the event came to a close, the festive spirit lingered in the air, leaving a lasting impression of unity and celebration. SEGi University extends its heartfelt wishes for a prosperous and fulfilling year ahead to all!
