The Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA) participated in an International Women’s Day programme organised by the Faculty of Business, Accountancy, and Law on 8 March 2023, in a positive step towards promoting women’s health and raising awareness of breast cancer. The event provided free clinic breast examinations to students and employees, emphasising the importance of early detection in improving treatment outcomes and saving lives.
BCWA is a tax-exempt organisation that was founded in 1986 and registered with the Malaysian Registrar of Societies in 1988. The mission of the organisation is based on the belief that a breast cancer survivor can use her experience to help another woman facing the same challenges. The Breast Cancer World Alliance (BCWA) is a member of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), Reach Recovery International (RRI), and the Advanced Breast Cancer Global Alliance.
Breast cancer is a major public health concern around the world, and early detection is critical to improving survival rates. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Malaysian women, with an estimated 5,000 new cases diagnosed each year, according to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia. Breast cancer awareness has increased in recent years, with initiatives such as BCWA’s participation in the International Women’s Day programme playing an important role.
Tan Ee Chiu, a Bachelor of Business Management student, emphasised the significance of such examinations in providing emotional, social, and material support to those affected by breast cancer, educating women on self-care during and after treatment, and raising awareness of the importance of breast cancer early detection.
The participation of the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia in the International Women’s Day programme is a step forward in promoting women’s health and raising awareness of breast cancer. Because breast cancer is the most common cancer in Malaysian women, early detection and education are critical for improving survival rates. The efforts of the association to provide free clinic breast examinations are a valuable contribution to the fight against breast cancer, and we thank BCWA for their support and contribution.
