On 20 March 2023, Bachelor of Science (Hons) Quantity Surveying students from SEGi University & Colleges had the opportunity to visit the CIDB IBS Gallery. The purpose of the visit was to introduce students to the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), the construction industry’s highest regulatory body, and their roles in ensuring the sustainability of construction stakeholders.
Ts Muhammad Hanafi, the person in charge of the CIDB IBS Gallery, led the visit, which was accompanied by AP Sr Ahmad Faris Omar and Ts Zamzarina Binti Md Judyar, lecturers on the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Quantity Surveying programme. The visit was attended by 25 students currently enrolled in the programme.
The visit had several goals, including introducing the students to CIDB IBS SDN BHD, the government’s sole caretaker to encourage the use of Industrialised Building System (IBS) with a target of 70% IBS score in public and private projects. Students were also shown the IBS Gallery, which features current IBS products, system buildings, and components that align with the IBS curriculum.
Furthermore, the visit allowed students to engage with CIDB IBS linkages with IBS manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors, which is critical in ensuring the construction industry’s long-term growth. The visit also allowed lecturers and SEGI to collaborate with CIDB and learn about the latest trends and advancements in the construction industry.
The adoption of IBS has had a positive impact on the construction industry in terms of productivity, cost efficiency, and quality assurance, according to the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB). The CIDB has set a target of 50% IBS adoption in the construction industry by 2030, with a particular emphasis on promoting IBS use in affordable housing projects.
The technical visit by Bachelor of Science (Hons) Quantity Surveying SEGi students to the CIDB IBS Gallery was a success, providing valuable insights and knowledge on the importance of IBS in the construction industry. With the collaboration of SEGi and CIDB, students and lecturers can continue to stay up to date on the latest advancements and trends in the industry and contribute to the construction sector’s long-term growth.
