SEGians took part in a significant beach clean-up initiative at Bagan Lalang Beach, marking a step towards combating pollution and protecting coastal ecosystems. Organised by the Blitz Group under the Co-Curricular Management MPU3442 course, this event saw volunteers from SEGi University Kota Damansara come together to tackle marine pollution and contribute to environmental conservation.
The clean-up was part of a broader effort to promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular emphasis on SDG 13, Climate Action, SDG 14, Life Below Water, and SDG 15, Life on Land. By addressing pollution on both land and in the water, the event sought to prevent harm to marine life, reduce waste along the coastline, and preserve the health of the beach’s ecosystem.
Participants were divided into three groups to cover the 1 km long stretch of beach, collecting litter and waste that had accumulated along the shore. Armed with gloves and trash bags, they worked efficiently to gather discarded materials, significantly improving the cleanliness of the beach. Although the hot weather and long hours prompted a cancellation of the waste sorting session, the volunteers made a visible difference by collecting all the rubbish and leaving it ready for the garbage collector.
The event was a clear demonstration of how students are actively involved in practical environmental work, gaining hands-on experience in sustainability while also contributing to global climate and biodiversity goals. The participants were also briefed on the importance of preserving natural habitats and the impact of waste on marine ecosystems.
By taking action to preserve the environment, SEGi students not only help reduce pollution but also raise awareness of the importance of keeping our coastlines clean. Through initiatives like this, they contribute to global efforts to combat climate change and biodiversity loss.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 13 – Climate Action
SDG 14 – Life Below Water
SDG 15 – Life on Land
