Impactful Vision Screening at Children’s Training Centre

On Saturday, 2 March 2024, final year students and staff from the Faculty of Optometry and Vision Sciences at SEGi University provided essential vision care services during a Medical Camp at the Children’s Training Centre. Organised by the Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise, the event saw the SEGi team screening 172 participants for vision and eye-related issues, underscoring SEGi’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3, which focuses on Good Health and Well-being.

The camp was a resounding success, with SEGi’s team utilising their expertise to make a significant impact on the community. The comprehensive screenings aimed to identify and address various eye conditions, ensuring that the participants, primarily children, received the necessary attention and follow-up care. This initiative is part of SEGi University’s broader effort to engage with the community and provide practical, real-world experiences for its students.

According to the World Health Organization, at least 2.2 billion people globally have a vision impairment or blindness, of which at least 1 billion cases could have been prevented or have yet to be addressed. By participating in events like this medical camp, SEGi University is actively contributing to reducing these statistics and promoting better health outcomes.

The event also provided an invaluable learning opportunity for SEGi’s final year optometry students, allowing them to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting. This hands-on experience is crucial for their professional development and helps prepare them for future careers in optometry and vision sciences.

SEGi University’s involvement in the medical camp exemplifies its dedication to both academic excellence and community service. By collaborating with organisations like the Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise, SEGi not only enhances its students’ learning experiences but also makes a tangible difference in the community.

As SEGi University continues to align its activities with global health initiatives, its efforts in events like this medical camp demonstrate a strong commitment to improving health and well-being. This proactive approach helps ensure that SEGi graduates are not only well-educated but also socially responsible and ready to contribute positively to society.
