WHAT ENGINEERING STUDENTS REALLY LEARNED FROM YAKULT

Students from the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Centre for Pre-University Studies programmes had the opportunity to bridge theory and industry practice during an immersive industrial visit to Yakult (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd on 30 June 2025. The visit was part of SEGi University’s commitment to integrating real-world exposure into academic development, ensuring that students are not only academically proficient but also industry-ready.

Upon arrival at the Yakult facility, the group was warmly welcomed by PR & Science Coordinator Liew Wan Hui, who introduced students to Yakult’s corporate values and sustainability efforts. The experience began with light refreshments, followed by a comprehensive factory tour that unveiled the intricacies of probiotic beverage production, from the preparation of Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain to high-speed bottling and packaging operations.

Students observed cutting-edge processes in quality control, hygiene regulation, and automated engineering systems — providing firsthand insight into industrial standards, efficiency benchmarks, and precision-driven production lines. These encounters allowed students to contextualise their classroom learning, especially in areas such as thermodynamics, control systems, and electromechanical integration.

Such engagements are crucial in preparing students for a workforce that is evolving rapidly. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report (2023), 44% of workers’ core skills are expected to change by 2027, with problem-solving, self-management, and technology use becoming increasingly vital. Experiences like the Yakult visit empower students to better understand employer expectations and adapt accordingly.

The tour also served as a platform to explore career prospects in the engineering sector, with students gaining valuable insights into workplace culture, job roles, and innovation pathways. More than a visit, it was a step forward in shaping socially responsible engineers who understand the role of sustainability in industry. Yakult’s emphasis on health, cleanliness, and environmental sustainability further highlighted the relevance of aligning engineering education with ethical production and consumption practices.

SEGi extends its sincere appreciation to the management and staff of Yakult (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd for hosting the visit and for their generous hospitality amidst a demanding production schedule.
