Empowering Women in Science: SEGi Celebrates Gender Equality and SDG 5

In a resolute stand against outdated gender stereotypes hindering women’s progress, a wave of initiatives is sweeping through society, determined to empower women to shatter barriers. At the forefront of this movement is the recognition that education is the cornerstone of individual and societal advancement, particularly for women.

In a bold declaration of commitment to this cause, the School of Communication & Creative Design (SoCCD) spearheaded a momentous celebration of Gender Equality and Sustainable Development Goal 5. Their initiative took shape in the form of an enlightening showcase titled “Fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 5: Empowering Women and Girls in Science.” The event aimed to challenge stereotypes and foster equitable participation in the scientific domain.

Held recently at SEGi College Kota Damansara, the showcase was a testament to the diverse talents and remarkable journeys of women who have defied societal norms to make profound contributions to science.

Central to the event’s mission was the promotion of equal opportunities for women and girls in scientific research, aiming to enrich scientific discourse and catalyse innovative perspectives within the field.

The showcase featured a compelling selection of articles highlighting the extraordinary achievements of six prominent female figures, both locally and internationally. Among the esteemed local figures were Dr. Nur Amalina binti Che Bakri, a trailblazing Malaysian surgeon, Susan Lim, a renowned Malaysian Monogenea Expert, and Shivaani Mariapun, a leading Asian Scientist. Internationally acclaimed luminaries included Marie Curie, revered for her groundbreaking work in radiology, Sunetra Gupta, a distinguished Indian-born British Epidemiologist, and Rampa Rattanarithikul, an esteemed Mosquito Expert.

The showcase’s impact transcended the campus, resonating throughout SEGi University & Colleges, thereby expanding its reach and fostering a deeper understanding of the crucial role women play in advancing scientific progress.

Through this momentous celebration, SEGi’s School of Communication & Creative Design not only paid tribute to the remarkable achievements of these trailblazing women but also underscored the indispensable role of gender equality in advancing sustainable development goals. The event served as a guiding light, inspiring future generations to pursue their scientific passions, liberated from the shackles of societal expectations and stereotypes.
