SEGi Launches Plant Adoption Program for Sustainable Urban Living

In a proactive move toward environmental sustainability and community engagement, SEGi introduces the Plant Adoption Program under the banner of Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.

The Plant Adoption Program is a pioneering initiative that encourages individuals and groups to adopt and care for a plant in designated public spaces or on their own property. Spearheaded by the BQS Department at SEGi, this program aims to augment the urban forest canopy, promote environmental awareness, and actively involve the community in the protection and enhancement of their local environment.

Participants are invited to bring any kind of plant to adopt, becoming responsible for its care, including watering, pruning, and overall maintenance throughout its lifetime. The uniqueness of this program lies in its flexibility—participants can exchange plants among friends, faculty, administration staff, or anyone on campus. Moreover, they have the option to give away plants to friends or individuals willing to care for them, fostering a sense of communal responsibility.

The Plant Adoption Program yields numerous benefits, ranging from improved air quality and reduced urban heat island effects to increased biodiversity and enhanced aesthetic value within the local community. Beyond the tangible advantages, the initiative serves as a catalyst for community engagement, environmental consciousness, and direct action to enhance the local environment.

Led by Dr. Maisarah Makmor, Assoc. Prof. Sr Ahmad Faris Omar, Sr Ts. Eunice Chia Mei Ling, Ts. Mashanim Mahadzir, Ts. Zamzarina Md Judyar, Mohd Farhan Mohd Nasir, and Noor Hidayah Elmi, the Plant Adoption Program signifies SEGi’s commitment to sustainability, community well-being, and the betterment of the urban environment.

The inaugural event is scheduled for September 20, 2023, from 12 pm to 2 pm at SEGi Kota Damansara campus, Left Wing Level 1. Join hands with the BQS Department and be a part of this transformative initiative, contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.
