Students Learn from Top Industry Professional

Students from SEGi University’s Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology had the opportunity to learn from a leading industry professional at a recent university-hosted talk. Ir Hasrin Hashim, Group MD/CEO of HUDA Group of Companies, shared his engineering expertise, specifically in Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) in the Oil & Gas industry.

Ir Hasrin, a professional engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and a member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), drew on his 25 years of industrial experience in a variety of capacities to provide insights into the EPCC industry’s prospects and career opportunities. The presentation covered various aspects of EPCC, such as construction, infrastructure, and manufacturing, as well as procurement, project management, and design consultancy.

The session was especially beneficial to the 38 students in attendance, who were able to learn from an industry expert and gain valuable insights into the field. Ir Hasrin also shared some case studies with photos in EPCC, which provided a real-world understanding of the industry’s work.

The significance of such discussions cannot be overstated, particularly in the current economic climate. According to Malaysian government data, the engineering sector is expected to grow at a 3.4% annual rate, with the industry requiring 270,000 engineers by 2025 to meet the growing economy’s demands. According to data from the Malaysian Department of Statistics, the oil and petrol industry, in particular, is a significant contributor to the Malaysian economy, generating approximately RM65 billion in revenue in 2020.

SEGi University’s efforts to provide such opportunities for students to learn from industry experts are commendable, as they play a critical role in shaping the country’s workforce. Dr Ng and Ir Azri presented a token of appreciation to the speaker in recognition of Ir Hasrin’s contributions, and all attendees posed for a group photo to commemorate the event.

The talk was a valuable experience for the SEGi University students, who learned about the opportunities and prospects in the engineering industry, particularly in EPCC in the oil and gas industry. Ir Hasrin’s insights, combined with the university’s efforts to expose its students to such experiences, will help students prepare to meet the challenges of the future workforce.
