In conjunction with International Women’s Day, the Counselling Services of Student Affairs, together with the Peer Counsellors Group and ChalkZone Acad3mia, has organised a gift dedication and a talk to celebrate women for their contributions. The event also had the purpose of raising further awareness of the challenges women still faced today, in par with this year’s theme “Break the Bias”.
The International Women’s Day celebration in SEGi University kicked off as early as three weeks before the actual day, beginning with the Soap Box Dedication Drive. A booth was set up on campus where students and staff members can pre-order special gift boxes dedicated to the women they want to express their appreciation.
It was such an exciting occasion on 8th March, seeing the smiles on the recipients’ faces when they received their gift boxes. Members in charge of this special delivery were overwhelmed with warm and fuzzy feelings. They witnessed these ladies’ beautiful faces lit up at the sight of the pretty soap gift boxes, ordered, packaged, and delivered with tender loving care.
The next day, 9th March, the celebration continued with an online talk entitled “A Journey Against All Odds”. Three female speakers with various backgrounds were invited, namely Professor Zahrah Saad (Dean of Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery), Dr. Salehatul Khuzaimah (veterinarian) and Shafiqah Othman (writer & social activist). The talk was filled with great insights and valuable messages. The speakers’ sharing were inspirational and impressive; they served as role models of women who managed to break barriers and fight the accepted norms for how we see women and what they can achieve.
“A successful woman is one who can build a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at her.”
